The Laughing Buddha travels the country and spreads joy, prosperity and happiness wherever he goes. Happiness is one of Buddha’s greatest gifts. He reminds us to always keep our sense of humor, even in times of financial trouble.

The statue of the Laughing Buddha shows him standing on a bag, richly outfitted for his travels with many symbols of wealth or prosperity.

His bag represents fulfillment of wishes or can also be the blessings of Buddha. The gourd that hands from his staff can symbolize many things: physical nourishment for a journey, the water of life, or spiritual sustenance. He also carries a string of coins (symbols of prosperity), and holds a Joo-i (symbol of good wishes and prosperity) in his left hand. The talisman pendant is carved with a symbol meaning “good fortune.”

The Buddha is usually shown having large, elongated ear lobes and a bump at the third eye, which are signs of wisdom and enlightenment.

Many believe that rubbing the Buddha’s belly brings joy, luck and prosperity.
