This statue
of the Laughing Buddha shows him ready for his travels with a large
bag slung over his right shoulder and carrying all else he needs for
his journey: a gourd, a fan and his prayer mala. His large, elongated
ear lobes are a sign of wisdom. The bag represents
fulfillment of wishes or can also be the blessings of Buddha. Happiness
is one of the Laughing Buddhas greatest gifts. The gourd can
symbolize many things: physical nourishment for a journey, the water
of life, or spiritual sustenance. The fan is for
teaching, primarily used for emphasizing points of a speech, and the
mala is traditionally used as way to count prayers or blessings. Many believe that rubbing the Buddhas belly brings joy, luck and prosperity.
